6:00 p.m.—DART Information Session—Room 101 of the Stuckert Career Center.

Dustin Pugel, UK alum and organizer with The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center, will be on campus Monday, Nov. 19 at 6:00 pm in Stuckert Career Center Room 101 to discuss careers in the field of community organizing with students and alumni interested in empowering communities and working for social change.

DART is now individuals interested in launching a career in community organizing. The DART Center has built coalitions throughout the country that have won important victories on a broad set of justice issues including:

* Education reform in low-performing public schools
* Job Training
* Drugs and Violence
* Criminal Recidivism
* Living Wage
* Neighborhood Revitalization
* Predatory Lending
* Affordable Housing, etc.

The DART Organizers Institute combines a classroom orientation with infield training at a local grassroots organization.  During training, organizers are provided with a cost of living stipend (equivalent to $27,000/year) and travel reimbursement. Graduates of the Organizers Institute are placed into permanent full-time, salaried positions earning $34,000/year + benefits.

The DART Organizers Institute will begin June 24, 2013.  Training locations and permanent placements sites include cities in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, South Carolina, Virginia and Florida.

5:30 p.m. – The Challenge of Interpretation: Presenting the Art of the Islamic World in a post-911 Landscape–WT Young Auditorium. Sponsored by the Islamic Society of Somerset, the College of Fine Arts, and the Honors Program. The Challenge of Interpretation is a lecture by Navina Najat Haidar, the curator and driving force behind the new Islamic galleries at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. In November 2011, after an almost decade-long reinstallation project, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened new galleries for the art of the Arab Lands, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia and later South Asia. While rediscovering the Met’s extraordinary collection was at the heart of the overwhelmingly positive response of audiences, the fresh interpretations offered in the display also played an important role in giving the works of art a new meaning and relevance. The political and cultural landscape against which the reinstallation was conceived and executed also influenced audience responses. Haidar will reflect on some of the curatorial decisions and institutional strategies that shaped the galleries on November 15th.

5:30 – 8:30 p.m.—After Office Hours—After Office Hours is a UK community building initiative designed to reach out to all students. This outreach program will allow faculty, staff, and student leaders the opportunity to spend time in Patterson Hall to address questions, concerns and curiosities!

7:30 p.m. – Students Taking Action Globally (STAG) – CSI SMART classroom, room 106 of the Student Center. STAG will be screening a documentary called The New Rulers of the World, a documentary which takes a critical look at the relationship between globalization and the garment industry. In the film, BBC correspondent John Pilger takes us behind the scenes of sweatshop factories in Indonesia. Following the video, we will open up for discussion with representatives from labor rights groups on campus. Invitation is extended to everyone, so feel free to forward this message to your friends and listservs and come out and enjoy the film! *Free popcorn!!!

DanceBlue 5K: To kick off UK's Homecoming Week there will be a DanceBlue 5K. It will be on Sunday, October 14th at Commonwealth Stadium at 3:00 pm. The early-registration fee is $15 and after September 28th until the day of the race the registration fee is $20. I hope that the honors program will have a presence at this event.
