Monday, 2/18
All week: First Generation Week—checkout the attachment for more information! February 18-22, 2013, is First Generation Week at UK. A series of events are planned throughout the week starting with our rally on Monday, Feb. 18th at noon in the Student Center Small Ballroom. Join Interim Provost Tim Tracy and Interim Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education Dr. Ben Withers as they help kick off a great week. Free food and t-shirts as well as a resource fair for students will be available from noon to 2 p.m.

Tuesday, 2/19
7:00 pm – Making Dream Catchers– Patterson Hall.

Wednesday, 2/20
5:00 pm –The End of Poverty—Join Diane Loeffler for a screening of this film and a group discussion in the WT Young Auditorium!

Thursday, 2/14
       3:30 – 4:30 p.m. – HP Knit Club – Honors Student Lounge. Bring your fiberwork in progress or learn how on our supplies!

Friday, 2/15
3:00 – 4:00 p.m. – JJP Club – Honors Student Lounge. Bring your journals or other writing projects!

3:00 – 5:00 p.m. – “The Lost Art of Letter Writing” – Join Meg Marquis in Patterson Hall for a presentation and practical instruction in the art of letter writing. Make sure you bring the snail-mail address of someone to write to!

Tuesday, 2/12
6:00 pm – Mean Girls – That’s so FETCH! Patterson Hall screening of Tina Fey’s comedy!

Thursday, 2/14
       11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. – I Love Mountains Day, Frankfort Register HERE. We will leave from the Student Center parking lot at 11am sharp and return around 3pm!
3:30 – 4:30 p.m. – HP Knit Club – Honors Student Lounge. Bring your fiberwork in progress or learn how on our supplies!

5:00 p.m. — Faculty Dinner with Nancy Jones —Blazer Hall. Please RSVP HERE.
5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Open House for the Campus Master Plan Atrium of the Bio-Pharm Building. This open house forum will include various stations where attendees can view and comment on some of the alternatives that Sasaki and Associates are pursuing for the future of the UK campus. Team members will be available for questions and feedback. Please stop by to review the alternatives that are being considered and to give us your input.

outs of the Independent Project process in the Honors Student Lounge

7:00 p.m.  Opportunities for Academic Excellence Room 200, Funkhouser Building. See attached flyer for more information! First year students with a GPA of 3.5 and above are invited to learn about several competitive programs on campus!

Thursday, 2/7
       3:00 p.m. — 19th Annual Edward T. Breathitt Undergraduate Lecture — Ashleigh Lovelace will present, “Nostalgia in the Present: The ‘Death of Print’ and a Contemporary Crisis of Communal Identity” in the auditorium of W. T. Young Library.

7:00 p.m. – On the Road Tour – Student Center Room 249. Green Thumb (campus environmental group) is hosting an event called the On the Road Tour where individuals impacted by mountain top removal mining from Appalachia will be sharing their stories.

Kentucky Honors Roundtable (KHR)
Who:  Presenters are Honors students from the public Universities throughout the state of Kentucky.
What:  Present your research or poster or participate in a panel presentation. Musical, vocal, or theatrical performances are also welcome.
Where:  Here at UK in the Student Center.
When:  Fri/Sat, February 15th/16th, 2013 (Friday evening dinner/Trivia Night; present on Saturday)
Why:  Gain experience and confidence presenting, showcase your hard work, list this accomplishment on your resume.
How:  Submit your 100-200 word abstract to Brad Hubbard (
brad.hubbard@uky.edu) for review.
Note:  Deadline for proposal submission is January 31st.  Any UK Honors student interested in presenting can participate.

Saturday, 1/19
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.—MLK Day of Service Challenge—Students from UK, Transylvania and BCTC will bridge the gaps between the institutions by joining to serve the beloved community we all share sending mixed groups of 10-12 students from each school to serve different non-profit organizations. At these sites, groups will be asked to complete a special project assigned by the organization. We will only give you the location and background information about the organization your group will be serving. MORE INFO HERE!
